   WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

Safety Issues- Most homeowners overuse chemicals and long term affects of common chemical products such as roundup are still unknown.  The safety of small children, pets, and wildlife is an area of concern. CNN.com recently reported a case where a dog's bladder cancer was attributed to lawn chemicals.

Environmental Issues-  Runoff from chemicals pollutes the groundwater, kills beneficial soil insects, and builds up, killing wildlife as it is depositied into the ocean.  Using chemicals makes living things dependent upon them, and makes some insects immune to what once was a lethal toxin. Pesticides not only make the insects stronger, they kill the natural enemies (beneficial insects) of the problem.

Natural- There is no possible sustainability of a chemically dependent outdoor setting. It is against nature's way, and your yard and garden will prefer the natural organic way.  The current farmland process which has been carried over to homeowners has produced a problem. Topsoil is lost or becomes of lower quality, land becomes less fertile, the excessive use of pesticides results in more, stronger pests, while productivity and actual arable land declines as the soil is weakened and fed with chemicals.

SO WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN?

Organic landscaping is bringing the process of nature into your property. The natural survival of a meadow or forest is not from chemicals or intervention, but from the Earth's system. Letting your property develop the same system requires nurturing the soil, careful observation, and using natural controls over pests and diseases and weeds. Organic landscaping is a newer term, but it describes the way the earth has been landscaped for centuries before the advent of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Whether you simply want to produce healthy edible plants to eat or you would like to enjoy a lush, chemical free lawn that is more drought tolerant and disease resistant, this site is a good start. Below is a link that provides more information on the harmful effects of chemicals.
